Day 13
Day 13

Our drive to Skagway was incredible. The Klondike highway provided us amazing views from mountaintops, to valleys, and the Gulf of Alaska. Once in Skagway, however, we quickly realized that the community had sold out to the corporations who own the cruise ships that dock during the summer months. Ten years ago, Skagway was filled with local artists and a sense of community. Now, you drive down the streets and you can sense the amount of money invested in the cheap latex paint that was applied to the cities historical buildings. It’s all designed to accommodate the flocks of adults during their “Disney like vacation”. The minute they step off the ships, the vacationer walks into the community designed by the same company they bought their vacation from. Not knowing any of this, the vacationer eagerly approaches the “Con-Business” and opens their wallet to shop. Most products sold here in Skagway are shipped from other parts of the country, made and designed as “Alaska only products”.
